Once again, women, children and men died in a bomb attack claimed by Daesh, terrible player of a policy of terror. We express our full solidarity with all families as wells as we share their pain. As each time an attack occurs, it must be said that these acts have no possible justification whatever the cause, that the authors claim to defend, might be.

AEDH calls for respect for democracy and human rights throughout Europe
29 May 2017 - The European Association for the Defence of Human Rights (AEDH) follows with great concern the violations of civil and political rights in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It is a concern over the long-term process of promoting democratic reforms from 1989 to the present. Unfortunately, today these countries are faced with a new challenge for democracy and fundamental rights. In Romania but also across the region, increasing in numbers and well-organised groups erode the democratic foundations of the societies.

Conference : Rethinking the European Union, rethinking civic engagement
26 May 2017 - At the occasion of its General Assembly, AEDH organised a special conference for rethinking the European Union and civic engagement. The common project of European states is facing a crisis. The latter is illustrated by the Brexit, the building of blocks among states, the closing of borders and the multiplication of individual actions by member states. In this context, we need to explore options to rebuild the European Union on its founding values of human rights and democracy.

Joint open letter calling on the General Affairs Council to trigger Article 7 TEU ahead of the 16 May 2017 debate on the situation of the Rule of Law in Poland
19 May 2017 - On Tuesday 16 May 2017, the situation of the rule of law and human rights in Poland has been examined in the General Affairs Council. The debate followed a formal request made by the European Commission to the Council to debate the situation. It was an important moment, as it was the very first time that EU governments had the rule of law and human rights record of one of their fellow member states placed on their agenda.

2015-16 ENAR Shadow Report on racism and migration in Europe
2 May 2017 - Racism plays a role in migrants’ exclusion and violations of their rights across the European Union. According to the new report released by the European Network Against Racism (ENAR), which AEDH is a member, migrants are increasingly the targets of racist violence and speech ; and face discriminatory policies and attitudes hindering their access to the labour market.

The European Council gave the green light to sign the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence
11 May 2017 – The European Council authorised the signing, on behalf of the EU, of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence with regard to asylum and non-refoulement. On this occasion, AEDH reiterated its call on the European Union to ratify the ECHR. The EU accession process to the ECHR, enshrined in the Stockholm Programme of 11 December 2009 remains at a standstill.

Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism (KISA), Cyprus - Cyprus should proceed with the immediate implementation of CERD’s recommendations
24 May 2017 – The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) published its concluding observations relative to the implementation by the Republic of Cyprus of the Convention for the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. Serious concerns have been expressed notably regarding hate speech against asylum seekers, Turkish Cypriots and human rights activists.

23 May 2017 – Significant citizen mobilisations of solidarity occurred in several large cities of Europe to denounce the persecution of homosexuals in Chechnya. It is precisely to the gender issue that LDH France devotes its letter on Human Rights in Eastern Europe and the Post-Soviet Space.
